IOTA EXISTS TO PROMOTE & TO ENCOURAGE ENGAGEMENT WITH THE ARTS AND CREATIVE INDUSTRIES. Thank you for your support.

2020-21 had a flavour all of its own. We were working from home to bring you our 2020 programme - one way or another, sooner or later!

As 2019 continues (with it’s own unique brand of chaos), you can rely on iota to bring you a great range of new work from across the arts disciplines and from Scottish and International artists.

Recently:

‘KINDER KINDER@ Norman Sutton-Hibbert 19 Sept.-5 October @iota

For most of his adult life Sutton Hibbert has been interested in the impact that the behaviour and attitudes of adults, both in the micro and macro sense, have had and are still having on children.

Children still die every day or become parentless due to preventable diseases; world-wide there are thought to be in excess of 250,000 child soldiers; countless die or are maimed due to senseless conflicts, while others are persecuted because of religious or ethnic intolerance.

The works in this exhibition respond to the stories of many of these children, past and present.

‘Street Shapes’ presents the emerging talent of Photography Student, Ruaridh Fraser.(23-31 August2019)

Born and based in Glasgow, this urban context offers him endless inspiration and source material for street photography, which is his main interest. Fraser uses an old Pentax to produce carefully composed images. Packed with rich colours, shadows and shapes, this young view of the world is both painterly and punchy.

This new exhibition by David Campbell challenges the nature of what western media brands as “Islamic terrorism” and “Buddhist oppression”

Rowena Comrie:

An Eyeful of Vincent 9-25 August

Saturday 25 August: Artist Talk @ 2pm

If the eye supplies the mind with a constant flow of information, the individual considers the meaning of what is seen, and then judges it against the known. However, art offers the mind a different experience; it can stimulate unfamiliar feelings of the ‘sublime’, ‘aesthetic’ or even the ‘tasteful’. The surrealist intellectual Andre Breton unleashed many new concepts for this ‘beyond space and time’ feeling and opened up a fantastic variety of possibilities.

In this show the painterly adventures by Rowena Comrie tap into Breton’s dreamworld to seek out the sharp and smooth evocations of colour possible with formal arrangements in abstract dissonance. Guided specifically by Vincent Van Gogh’s tantalising mix of form and colour in his painting of ‘Bedroom at Arles’ :

"The walls are pale violet.

The floor is covered in red tiles.

The wood of the bed and chairs is a warm yellow.

The sheets and the pillow are light yellow green.

The quilt is scarlet.

The window is green.

The washstand is orange.

The washbasin is blue.

The doors are mauve…there is no white in the picture"

Richard Walker attic goes boom

iota proudly presents recent work by Richard Walker

Walker’s recent work is based on complex studio installations and attempts to investigate human vision and representation in its full complexity. Many of the newer paintings have a panoramic format and make reference to cinema, both in terms of spectacle and in the way the image emerges from the dark.

People/Place

Emma Crichton+ Ian Graham+ Laji Varghese:

A group exhibition featuring work by three photographers with Glasgow connections, People/Place presents contemporary photography in a Scottish and International context. Uncontrived, natural reality and vulnerability is portrayed by all three artists in these works about people and place. Portraits, still lives & landscapes, with links to Glasgow, The Forth, Galicia and Himachal Pradesh, together these works suggest that we may all have more in common that we realise.
