CODED

Mixed media installation broadens the idea of connection through different forms of communication, as the artist, GSA Fine Art Photography graduate (2022), pays homage to her family heritage, researching the duality between industrial labour and domestic care.

‘My autoethnographic approach to research and making (usually photo specific) in this case takes the form of installation for IOTA. Output paper reems show punch card translations from a recorded conversation between me and my father. The audio discusses the parallels between his occupation and pastime and the interlinked and transitional significances they have had in his life. I convert these conversations into baudot murray code (factory punch card code) referencing the labour intensive past and almost mimic musical composition which is relative to his upbringing in pipe bands along the west coast of Scotland. I have individually hand punched the translations, hanging them in the space with optional audio of the pipe band drum sequences for the public to listen to as they travel round the space. The walls feature a few key photographic works, some of which are archived from childhood. There are multiple translated handouts (including embossed braille), which I hand printed  in the SWG3 Caseroom, broadening this idea of connection through forms of communication.’ Meg Auld
